I am appalled after watching the video of George Floyd’s murder. It saddens my heart to see a man’s life taken so stoically. My prayers go out to his family, as I can’t imagine the pain they must be feeling, seeing their loved one go out like that. But it has been refreshing to see people coming together and speaking out against the injustice. Though Floyd’s voice was snuffed out, thousands of voices are speaking on behalf of him.
Our world is a broken place, and it’s certain that the problem goes beyond the social and political level. This is and has always been a spiritual matter. Justice must be sought, and people must be held responsible for their actions, but it’s clear to me that nothing but God can change the hatred and racism in people’s hearts. God will ultimately render justice where justice is due. Though my prayers goes out to all the victims of injustice, they also go out to anyone with hatred in their hearts, as that is a far more concerning issue in light of God’s love for every individual.
Kill the Us vs Them Mentality
One thing we all need to be mindful of is overgeneralizing and antagonizing certain groups of people. The problem is not cops. The problem is not white people. The problem is racism and hatred towards black people. We are in spiritual warfare, and we are in desperate need for prayer, compassion, and the courage to love one another deeply. This might be difficult for many to do, but we also need to love and pray for the very ones perpetuating the hatred. Hatred cannot drive out hatred, only love can.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” – Ephesians 6:12
