Some may question Lecrae’s decision in making a song with rapper Ty Dolla $ing, but after listening to the song, I don’t see the issue. Yes, Ty Dolla $ign is a secular rapper and usually raps about money, drugs, and sex, but guess what…he is not rapping about that stuff in “Blessings” and neither is lecrae. To the contrary, the song talks about gratitude and giving thanks to God for all the blessings. The lyrics are clean and they bring glory to God, Lecrae’s lyrics specifically; Ty’s lyrics don’t necessarily talk about God, but he still expresses a positive message. I want to lift up lecrae because he is using his talent and platform to be a light to an industry that desperately needs it.
Critics will say that he is compromising what he stands for, but that would only be the case if we saw Lecrae rapping about things such as money or drugs, things that he doesn’t condone or represent as a Christian. However, what we do see is Ty Dolla $ign being influenced positively. He didn’t swear, not even once, nor did he mention anything profane. Now that’s something else. To top it all off, the video is great. It shows family, laughter, food, and people having a great time together. Check it out!!!
God calls us to be light and salt to the earth (Matthew 5:13-16). We all have different gifts and were blessed with different resources. It’s our responsibility to use these things to bring glory to God while also seeing them as tools we can use to reach out to others. Likewise, Lecrae has the opportunity to influence those in the rap industry because he can relate to these rappers, their lifestyle, and their passion.
Before we make conclusions, we should take a listen to the song but also listen to Lecrae’s perspective when it comes to making music. He makes it clear that he makes music not only for the church, but also from the church to the world in order to reach those who haven’t heard the gospel. That being said, let’s count our blessings and continue using them to reach people and bring glory to God.
